So, what is plug in Solar?

Well it is exactly as it sounds i.e. a simple solar power system, commonly comprising of two solar panels and a dual micro-inverter that can be plugged into a wall socket. These systems are not as yet legal on the UK but are approved throughout Europe and Ed Miliband announced that they would soon be legalised in the UK and on sale in supermarkets.

In Europe the systems are limited to between 600W and 800W due to the fact that plug in means that the power is being put into the power socket and ring main in the reverse direction. This power therefore avoids the circuit breaker protection that grid power is distributed through. The assumption is that even 800W fed the wrong direction is unlikely to pose a fire hazard.

Obviously solar installation contractors and electricians are not happy to see plug in systems and have raised a series of concerns regarding the safety of the systems. I deal with this in detail within my videos and in the main the raised safety concerns are unfounded.
